Description

Begin your tour at Durban’s revitalized Point Waterfront, where you’ll explore the canals and learn about Port Natal, Durban Harbour, maritime trade, harbor workers, urban development, and the transformation of the historic Point district. Connect with the Golden Mile beachfront promenade near uShaka and continue north past beaches, piers, public art, hotels, restaurants, surfers, runners, families, and local residents enjoying Durban’s subtropical coastline. Depending on conditions, the route may pass uShaka Beach, Addington Beach, South Beach, Dairy Beach, North Beach, Bay of Plenty, Battery Beach, and the Suncoast beachfront. Along the way, your guide will explain Durban’s beach culture, surfing, swimming, fishing, public recreation, apartheid-era segregation of public amenities, and the transformation of the beachfront into shared public space in democratic South Africa. Continue towards Moses Mabhida Stadium, built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and recognized by its enormous arch, where you’ll stop for photographs, interpretation, and a complimentary refreshment, subject to operating arrangements on the day. Cycle south again towards the Point Waterfront at a controlled, recreational pace, enjoying changing views of the ocean, beaches, and Durban skyline. The experience combines sightseeing with storytelling and may cover Durban’s maritime origins, the history of the Point, Port Natal, Durban Harbour, urban regeneration, the Indian Ocean, the Golden Mile, beach culture, public-space transformation, tourism development, Moses Mabhida Stadium, architecture, and contemporary Durban life.
