Description
The tour begins in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal’s capital. Visit Pietermaritzburg City Hall, one of the largest brick buildings in the southern hemisphere, and view the Gandhi statue. Then head towards the Drakensberg mountains.
Your main destination is Kamberg Nature Reserve, part of the Maloti-Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site. The 6,300-hectare reserve in the mountain foothills offers scenic walks and rock shelters featuring San rock paintings. These artworks, created over at least 4,000 years, represent the spiritual heritage of the San people.
Next, visit the town of Howick to see Howick Falls, a 95-meter waterfall on the Umgeni River. The Zulu name for the falls is KwaNogqaza, meaning 'Place of the Tall One'.
The tour concludes at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site, where a sculpture made of 50 steel columns forms a 35-meter portrait of Mandela. The site also includes a museum dedicated to Mandela’s life and his struggle against apartheid.
