Itinerary

Day 1: Depart Durban at 08:00 and travel to Underberg near the Drakensberg mountains. In a guided 4x4, cross into Lesotho via Sani Pass, ascending from 1500m to 2874m. Options include hiking the escarpment or pony trekking along cliffs.

Day 2: Continue to Black Mountain Pass at 3240m. Visit remote Sani Top and Mokhotlong villages for insight into local life. Enjoy a picnic lunch overlooking the Senqu River, which becomes the Orange River in South Africa. Drive the Roof of Africa route including Taeeng Pass (3225m) and Motebong Pass (2820m), passing Letseng Diamond Mine and Afriski Mountain Resort. Overnight at Bird Haven in Hlotse around 18:00.

Day 3: Breakfast at 07:00, depart 08:00-08:30. Visit a nearby riverbed to see dinosaur footprints if water levels allow. Explore Kome Caves, inhabited by modern cave dwellers but originally shelters during the Lifqane wars. Travel to Thaba Bosiu, a site of cultural importance, then to Maseru for lunch around 13:00, experiencing the modern city blended with traditional culture. By 15:00, continue to Semonkong via Mantsa Pass. Check-in around 17:30.

Day 4: Breakfast at 07:30. Hike or 4x4 drive to Maletsunyane Falls. Depart Lesotho through Qacha’s Nek border, passing remote villages and following the Senqu River valley. Arrive Matatiele around 13:00 for lunch. Return to Underberg via scenic Drakensberg back roads, arriving between 15:00 and 16:00.
