The Hlola (explore) Umlazi is a tour which takes its guests right into the heart of the Umlazi township, situated just south of the Durban CBD. The Umlazi township, South Africa’s single largest township is occupied primarily by the urban, black community and this tour is guaranteed to provide valuable insight not only into the history and background of Umlazi but also into the exciting and intriguing formal and informal day to day activities of the people living in the area.

09H00: Introductions, refreshments, house rules & explanation of agenda

09H15: Travel to Umlazi, Background [ e’Thekwini Municipality economy, history, location & size, urban environment & challenges of Umlazi]

09H30: Glebelands:

This area is mainly occupied by the Community Residential Units (hostels). The area has a variety of economic activities with Megacity and Prince Mshiyeni Hospital. There are also some informal businesses in the area.

09H40: Ezimbuzini:

This area is a hive of activity as it supports an array of formal and many informal businesses. Includes markets for the livestock and muthi traders operating in the area

10H00: Travel through T-section:

A residential area with a strong association with I.F.P. A large Cemetery and Shembe Church site

10H15: Travel through U-Section:

Visit to Howlong Park.

Travel through Z –section:

Visit Power Place Tavern.

11H00: Travel through Z & P- section:

This area has a stadium which will be used as a training facility during 2010 FIFA World Cup. A popular train station is also located here. There are a number of informal businesses that also operate out of these informal settlements

11H15: Mangasuto Highway:

Parts considered the educational node of Umlazi. Also a number of container businesses which support the students. Travel through A section and the popular Izwelethu Butchery

11H30: Travel to V-section:

Visit Max’s Tavern a favorite meeting place for upwardly mobile.

12H00: Travel through V-industrial Section:

Economic activity developed naturally in this area, which houses the Magistrate’s Court, Ithala offices, a medical centre, sports facility and a police station. There are a number of businesses operating out of containers in this area.
